COVID-19 Mission Policy - Update
The CDC has announced that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or do social distancing indoors and outdoors in most settings. As we continue our missions, masks will not be required for those that have been vaccinated. However, if the family, a funeral home, church or other facility still requires masks, we will honor that request. Remember, there is one fact that directs everything we do:

We serve at the pleasure and request of the families of the fallen.

The Ride Captain will announce the protocol at the Mission Briefing before we are in proximity to family, friends and others. Until then MASKS ON.

If the family or organization requests it:

  1. We will remain socially distant from family or visitors.
  2. The Ride Captain may present the plaque and dog tags to the family privately.
  3. ALL members will wear a face mask over mouth and nose at all times from the time they dismount or leave their vehicle until they depart, unless advised directly by THE RIDE CAPTAIN. Members may remove masks if they are more than 8 feet from anyone else but must have it in place should anyone approach.

Failure to follow this will result in being ordered to leave the mission.

  4. I ask each member to make sure they have a mask with them at all times as well as hand sanitizer and possibly gloves (laundered between each mission).
I have reviewed this policy with National and have their agreement that failure to follow this is not only a violation of the trust of the people we serve but jeopardizes the health and safety of all involved.

Any person who does not wish to follow this policy should refrain from attending any mission. I am directing the Ride Captains to report any member who violates this policy.

Any member violating this policy will be removed immediately and permanently from the Patriot Guard Riders.

Mission Policy during the COVID-19 Crisis - Update
As you are aware, almost all public events are canceled due to the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) crisis. From the CDC, "Ongoing guidance recommends that, in areas where there is even minimal COVID-19, events likely to include 10 or more people at high-risk for serious issues should be cancelled. People at higher risk include older adults and people who have chronic medical conditions such as lung and heart disease, as well as diabetes."

With some stabilization of health conditions and other measures taken by funeral homes (limiting attendance, sanitization, etc.) we have updated our policy. In consideration of the many factors involved, we will immediately implement the following for all missions:

  1. We will accept mission requests but will notify the Primary Next of Kin as well as the funeral home and all other contacts that:
    a) We will not be indoors in proximity to family or visitors.
    b) The Ride Captain may present the plaque and dog tags to the family privately. No other members will assist or attend.
    c) ALL members MUST wear a face mask over mouth and nose at all times from the time they dismount or leave their vehicle until they depart. Failure to follow this will result in being asked to leave the mission.
    d) We ask that the family and friends maintain a safe distance of 8 - 10 feet at all times (therefore we cannot line the immediate entry area or open doors).
    e) We may participate in an escort maintaining a safe distance.
    f) We may pre-establish a flag line at the burial / interment site not less than 20 feet away from the expected family and friends area and not closer than 10 feet from an adjacent flag.
  2. I will still order the plaques and custom engraved dog tags and have them sent to the funeral home.
  3. We will offer to attend any memorial service the family will have in the future.
I ask each member to make sure they have a mask with them at all times as well as hand sanitizer and possibly gloves (laundered between each mission). I am personally ordering white band gloves as we have provided for the military at times.

Each member must consider the potential consequences without feeling any pressure to attend if you feel it unsafe for you or your family.

We hold the greatest respect for every man and woman that has served. In that light the safety and health of your families is important to us. In consideration of the many factors involved, we will immediately implement the following for all missions:

  1. We must politely decline all mission requests for the safety of family, friends, and our members.
  2. We will still order the plaques and custom engraved dog tags and have them sent to the funeral home. We will ask that they be presented by the funeral director.
  3. We will be honored to attend any memorial service your family will have in the future.
